VOICES

by Pulsing Heart

VOICES - a unique installation of light and sound and a landmark work in Australian choral music.

Composed by internationally acclaimed Australian composer Ekrem Eli Phoenix, VOICES features a masterful tapestry of 8 original choral works written especially for the project. Performed by VOX Ensemble of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and conducted by Elizabeth Scott, the music takes the listeners from a visceral and elemental beginning with ‘Primordium’, and delivers them to an ultimate requiem with ‘Solemnal’. With landmark pieces along the way exploring humour, joy, ancestry, identity and memory, the music conceals a precise complexity to create a hypnotic experience either as singular filaments of individual voices or in virtually infinite combinations of them.

Into the musical fabric, Phoenix skillfully weaves in silken threads of spoken word delivered by the young voices of VOX. The singers share their memories, reveal the questions that busy their minds, introduce themselves and tell us about their loved ones whom they’ve lost and they miss. Ringing with youth yet revealing the ageless depth of our shared humanity, in their voices, memories, questions, worries and hopes, we find ourselves. With this subtle device, Phoenix announces VOICES as a time-capsule and a historical artefact.
